Abstract:
This work is part of the study of the antibacterial and antioxidant of Algerian aromatic and medicinal plants. We conducted a study on a plant widely used by the local population, Artemisia herba alba. The aromatic plant comes from the regions of Ghardaïa, El Menia, and Tamanrasset.
Essential oils were extracted from the aerial part of the plants studied using the hydro-
distillation technique. The extraction yield obtained was 0.6892% from Ghardaïa, 0.8734% from El Menia, and 1.2145% from Tamanrasset.
The antibacterial activity showed that the Staphylococcus aureus strain was the most sensitive to our essential oils, with an inhibition zone of 18 mm. The antioxidant activity of the essential oils was evaluated using the DPPH radical scavenging test, which showed the presence of antioxidant activity in our oils (IC50 = 44.48 mg/mL for Ghardaïa, IC50 = 68.73 mg/mL for El Menia, and IC50 = 8.45 mg/mL for Tamanrasset).
This study showed that the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of Tamanrasset essential oil is the highest compared to essential oils from other two regions, and its extraction recorded the highest yield
